WE DECIDED TO GROW A LEGACY INSTEAD OF GRASS.
When we bought our property on the northern Sunshine Coast, it was a horse farm—paddocks, fences and a great deal of grass requiring attention without giving much back.
We thought we could do better.
We are Ric and Melissa: two people with horticulture inconveniently embedded in our DNA. Ric is the son of a horticulturist and has spent a lifetime fascinated by plants. Melissa comes from generations of farmers and has never managed to get growing things out of her blood.
With four adult children no longer requiring daily feeding and supervision, we found ourselves with some spare nurturing capacity.
So we filled the paddocks with future giants.
WE WOULD RATHER WORK WITH NATURE THAN ARGUE WITH HER.
We believe the most resilient landscapes begin with plants that naturally belong there.
Queensland can be unforgiving. Water becomes scarce, seasons fluctuate and conditions rarely consult the planting plan. Endemic species have spent a very long time adapting to this place. Put the right tree in the right environment and nature does much of the heavy lifting.
That means healthier trees, better establishment and less intervention over the long term.
Our farm is organic. Our Kauris are grown from carefully collected seed, watered with captured rainwater and raised outdoors in the conditions they will eventually encounter. We do not force rapid growth using synthetic fertilisers. We give them the time and conditions to become genuinely strong.
It is slower.
We are comfortable with that.
WE THINK IN CENTURIES.
There is something extraordinary about planting a tree that will outlive us, our children and perhaps even their children.
We imagine people hundreds of years from now walking beneath the Kauris being raised in our paddocks today. They may admire the trees without ever knowing who grew them or who had the vision to specify them.
We rather like that.
Great landscape architects and designers understand this instinctively. Their best work is not simply installed—it matures, becomes part of its place and leaves a legacy long after the original project brief has disappeared into an archive.
We want to work with people who care about that.
GOOD BUSINESS GROWS THE SAME WAY.
Little Big Tree Farm is in its early years of production, and we intend to be here for a very long time.
We believe enduring businesses are built through good human relationships, honest conversations and work that consistently lives up to its promise. We are far more interested in becoming a trusted long-term growing partner than making a quick sale.
For that relationship to work, our trees need to be among the healthiest and strongest in the industry. They need to establish well, thrive in the ground and justify the confidence of the person who specified them.
We stand behind what we grow.
SERIOUS TREES. OCCASIONAL DISCO.
We take propagation, plant health and growing conditions extremely seriously.
We also believe good work should contain some joy.
After a long day spent hand-sowing thousands of seeds, the production facility has been known to feature disco tunes, a mirror ball, lasers and a smoke machine.
It does nothing measurable for germination rates.
It does, however, create an excellent working environment.

Why this tree? In this place?
A tall, elegant form suited to landscapes where space, pathways and built infrastructure all matter.
Evergreen and comparatively clean, with a disciplined form and lighter lateral branching.
Native character and long-term stature capable of defining a place for generations.
